Why the latest Symbian OS based S60 3.2 and S60 5th Edition phones are included in Compatible Devices list for SymVPN 1.00 ?

Updated 2009-Jan-20. The latest news are added at the bottom.

Known limitations about SymVPN 1.00.xx usage
with non-Telexy developed software for the latest S60 3.2 and S60 5th Edition phones.

Question.
Why the latest Symbian OS based phones, S60 3.2 and S60 5th, are included in Compatible Devices list for SymVPN 1.00 despite the fact that majority of applications on these latest phones are unable to see and therefore to work with VPN Access Point created by SymVPN?

Answer.
Exist a few reasons to keep these phones in Compatible Devices list for SymVPN 1.00.

1. There are software products that exist and can work with SymVPN created VPN Access Points on these phones. Therefore this situation is not about compatibility of SymVPN with certain phones, but it is rather about compatibility of some OTHER software with the VPN Access Point implementation that is created accordingly to present Symbian OS requirements.

  • Example.
The owner of N97 phone needs to have Remote Desktop connection (via SymRDP for S60 5th) to his office computer over PPTP VPN connection. Everything is ready and is working for this task. SymVPN can be perfectly used for this task. Why should we tell this user that SymVPN is not compatible with N97 phone then?

2. The fact that some applications do not list SymVPN-created access points does not mean that these applications cannot see SymVPN APs. They could have displayed them just as any other applications that show SymVPN-created access points successfully (SymRDP for example). Those applications not displaying them just ignore the fact that Symbian S60 supports not only very popular LAN, CSD, PSD and other bearers, but Virtual bearer (including VPN) as well. For some reason they do not include Virtual APs in the list of APs they offer to the customers on the latest Nokia phones.
Unfortunately, this circumstance is out of our control. If you desperately need SymVPN-created access point in some application, please address your request to the corresponding software developers, asking them to provide Virtual AP support in their application. If such application was able to support Virtual APs on the previous phone models, but is unable to support it on the latest phone models, probably at least it could be stated in documentation for this software as a known limitation for the latest Nokia phones? If needed all help can be provided for all software developers if they will choose to address this issue in their software.
Of course it would be much better if this situation will be addresses by Nokia/Symbian in order to solve this problem for all applications at once. But until then it would be fare if this problem either will be addressed by individual software developers or known limitation will be clearly stated in documentation for this software.

To make it clear. We are NOT saying that the other software is doing something wrong. We are only stating the simple fact that many software products has lost ability to work with Virtual bearer (including VPN) after Destinations were introduced on the latest Nokia's phones. The reason why this situation happened needs to be properly investigated and addressed by Nokia and/or Symbian.

3. SymVPN software comes with the documentation. In the User Guide it is clearly described when and why SymVPN created Access Points may not be available on the latest Nokia's phones. The same is stated in FAQ section.

4. Taking in to consideration that not all users may read provided documentation. Fully functional Trial version is available for users in order to provide the perfect opportunity to evaluate this software and see if it can be used for each and every specific task on each particular phone before making a decision about purchase.

5. We understand that at the end no one is interesting in technical details explaining existing limitations. All users need just a one thing - to have software that will work in all situations and without any limitations.
That is why we are working with Nokia to address this situation.
Farther information will be posted as soon as it will be available.

The latest development.

    Hi,
It looks like you are right. ... [technical details are removed]... we are checking with our internal experts if its possible for 3rd party developers to install a new bearer plugin. We will update you once we have more information.

2009/Dec/08. At this stage we do have following as a facts.

  • It is recognised by Nokia that this problem do exist.
  • It is recognised by Nokia that in current circumstances the only way to fix this problem is to do something on "Nokia side".
  • Nokia has suggested that Telexy should pay for permission to create the special Plug-In for Nokia's phones. This Plug-In should be created by Telexy and provided for free to Nokia in order to make Nokia's phone to be able restore the lost ability to work with VPN AP after "Destinations" were introduced.
Telexy has made this payment and a request for this permission is sent. At this time Nokia is considering this request.

Hopefully, with cooperation from Nokia and Symbian this problem could be solved for Nokia's phones at the first stage at least.

2009/Dec/__. Nokia provided to Telexy the permission to create this Plug-In.
2009/Dec/__. Plug-In is created by Telexy and demonstrated to Nokia.
2009/Dec/__. Nokia suggested that Telexy should sign this Plug-In at Symbian.
2009/Dec/30. Telexy sent to Symbian the request to sign this Plug-In.
